Thaxted Cricket Club Saturday League v Essendon on Sat 01 Jun 2013 at 1.30 pm
Thaxted Cricket Club Lost
Match report
Thaxted suffered their first loss of the season at home to Essendon, losing by 145 runs, underlining the old adage that ‘catches win matches’. Thaxted’s impressive start to the season has been in spite of ever worsening performances; this loss is perhaps the wake-up call that they need.
On a green-looking wicket, the returning skipper, Pete Leach won the toss and much to the opposition’s satisfaction put them in. Following a quick start for Essendon, Thaxted’s opening quicks Mark Taylor and Miles Dixon began to hit their straps, bemusing the batters with both seam and swing. Thaxted began to suspect it wasn’t their day however, when the Essendon no. was dropped three times off Dixon in the slip cordon – he went on to carry his bat, scoring 131.
Despite the slips making up for their early indiscretion by taking a sharp catch of Taylor (1-57) – and Dixon (1-41) clean bowling the replacement – the rot had set in, resulting in a near comical number of simple dropped catches. The change bowlers (Jeremy Martin 1-33, Tim Jossaume 1-27, Tom Paget 1-14) struggled on manfully but given the seemingly never ending series of fielding calamities and therefore the growing confidence of the away team, were unlikely to make significant in-roads with perhaps the sensible line-and-length of the vice-captain, Aaron Gent, being the only exception (2-34). Essendon finished on what Thaxted will do well to top this season: an impressive 267-7.
In reply, Thaxted began well with Jeremy Martin (25)and Aaron Gent (21) setting a pace that exceeded that of the away team, putting on 50 in 10 overs before the loss of the first wicket. Essendon, however, made Thaxted regret their fielding generosity – missing none of their chances and setting in motion a collapse with only really P. Leach (31) and Tom Paget (18) really troubling the scorers beyond the openers. Thaxted finished on 122 and suffered a humbling defeat which they will do well to remember.
